Wright Information is an indexing service, providing indexes in whatever format you need. Whether you need a text file index, metatags for your web site, controlled vocabulary development, taxonomy or thesaurus construction, or index-entry embedding within your files, it's not a problem.

Wright Information provides personalized attention to your project. You get an index with depth and understanding your readers will value. You also get an indexer who has over fifteen years of intensive documentation and publication experience, one who knows how books and information are produced in print and online. You'll get someone who understands schedules, deadlines, and technology constraints, and can advise you if needed on thorny problems you may be facing. We can discuss an indexing process that fits your needs.

Wright Information can provide you with an index reflecting award-winning subject and terminology expertise in many areas, such as: hardware or software on both Windows and Macintosh platforms, typography, desktop publishing, archaeology, horticulture, geology, or natural history. Embedded indexing processes, online help systems, HTML projects, controlled languages, taxonomies, customized user interfaces, and CD-ROM projects are a specialty.

Need to know the advantages and disadvantages of different indexing methods, what embedded entries are, where keywords go, or how to incorporate indexing into your publishing process? You can find the answers here, whether it's a question about software, rates, experience, or just simply why indexes turn out better with a human indexer, not just a computer. If you want, you can take a short tour of samples of WI's indexes within Amazon's listed books.

Need to keep up with changes and indexing techniques? Check out the articles page, where you can find out more about online indexing and other topics. One favorite is "Single Source Indexing," which not only covers creating indexes for two or more different output formats in one set of files, but also describes the best interfaces for indexes online. More articles are listed on the articles page.

Getting started on an indexing project is easy. Make some preliminary notes on your project's requirements (software you use to produce your project, special constraints you have, your due dates... you get the idea). Then use the "Contact Information" button on this page, and either call or e-mail Wright Information. We'll discuss timing, fees, and all your terminology needs, and we'll go from there.

Wright Information is also a green business. Occupying an office in a building designed to maximize passive solar energy with trombe walls, we use only one third of the average propane usage every winter for heat. Surrounded by xeric plants chosen for their viability in the arid southwest, we use less than one fifth of the average water use in our area. After an intensive study of our electric use, we have managed to cut our electric bills in half, partly through the use of the Kill-A-Watt device which helps to measure electric use for appliances. And by switching to laptops and flat screen monitors, and by using Parallels on a Mac, we reduced the need for energy-hungry desktop computers, and the need for separate Mac and PC installations. We have a complete recycling program, including composting and a worm bin, for all office papers. We are very proud of our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment, and are planning to invest in more solar technology. As a home-based business, driving is not part of the job. Please ask us if you would like to know more about our energy-saving efforts.

Jan Wright is also now teaching a section of the UC Berkeley course on Indexing: Theory and Application. The course is a 6-month commitment, students can start at any time, and is conducted entirely online via web-based lessons and email assignments. The emphasis is on indexing theory and practice, indexing as a business, and related topics. For more information, visit Berkeley's Extension Catalog here.
