The A to Zia Chapter of ASI had a great conference this year in June. The information is below, but check this space for our next event in 2012!

New Mexico is known for hot chiles, old adobe buildings, cool beautiful mountains, a thrilling tramway ride, Native American art and archaeology, and now for metatopics and eBooks! Come join us as the A to Zia Chapter of the American Society for Indexing (ASI) presents a mini-conference featuring Kay Schlembach and Jan Wright, Saturday, June 25th, in Albuquerque. Stay an extra day or two and ride the Railrunner train to Santa Fe to shop, or drive out to visit beautiful sites such as Bandelier National Monument, the Valles Caldera wildlife management area, Acoma Pueblo, El Morro, or the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge. Come combine work and play!

Metatopic Menace - Kay Schlembach

Is it possible to master the metatopic? The era of search has made this question even more important. It is my opinion that taming the metatopic, both main and local, is the key to developing a stable index structure. We look at examples, discuss various approaches, and suggest several solutions to this challenge. We will also touch on biographies, and perhaps even the ASI/H. W. Wilson Award for Excellence in Indexing.

Kay Schlembach has been passionate about teaching beginning indexers for more than a decade. A “marvelous, vivacious teacher,” Kay is a managing partner with Potomac Indexing, LLC (along with Richard Shrout, Seth Maislin, and Mary Coe
www.potomacindexing.com). In addition to speaking, she has served as an ASI director, an ASI Training Course developer, committee member and evaluator. Coming from a diverse background, including homeschooling gifted children and real estate appraisal, Kay has been a full-time indexer since 1997. After two decades in Houston, Texas, Kay and family now live in northern Virginia.

eBooks and eReaders - Jan Wright

eBooks are being published at a faster and faster rate each year. Just how fast is the trend growing? What kinds of impacts will it have on our industry? Join us to talk about eBook indexes, issues, and work-arounds, as well as a hands-on session with various brands of popular eReaders. We'll be sure to have real indexes on the eReaders, so that you can look at the advantages and disadvantages of indexing on the small screen.

Jan Wright has been indexing and taxonomizing since 1991. Her experience in technical documentation indexing goes deep, from her experience as a print production specialist at Aldus Corporation, her work for Visio Corporation on online help and translated indexes, her work for several Microsoft departments in indexing, taxonomies, and controlled vocabularies, and for Autodesk, where her indexes are translated into multiple languages, based in an XML system that repurposes the content into multiple output formats and versions. She has been a member of the American Society for Indexing since 1991, has won several awards from the Society for Technical Communication, and in 2009 won the ASI/H.W. Wilson Award for Excellence in Indexing for her index to Real World Indesign CS3.
